According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), all SIM cards used in the nation are produced domestically.
This was stated during a training session for media executives held in Lagos by NCC's Head of New Media and Information Security, Engr. Babagana Digima.
Through the Nigeria Office for Development in the Indigenous Telecommunications Sector (NORDIT), the commission is dedicated to promoting indigenous participation in the industry and local content. Digima ascribed this accomplishment to this effort.
"The National Policy for Promotion of Indigenous Content in the Telecommunications Sector, which founded NORDIT, and the role of the NCC in fostering Indigenous participation by telecom businesses are outlined in Sections 1D to F of our Act.
One of the main areas in which NORDIT has been extremely influential is indigenous engagement.
Prior to this, between 99 and 100 percent of SIM cards in Nigeria were imported during the previous two years.
And when NORDIT arrived, we made it one of our main low-hanging fruit goals to have domestic SIM card manufacturing happen within five to six months.
According to Digima, "We instructed all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to source their SIM cards locally. As a matter of fact, 100% of all SIM cards used in Nigeria are manufactured locally, with no importation."
The former Head of NORDIT, Digima, stated that the commission works through NORDIT to promote indigenous participation in all facets of telecoms by businesses and individuals.
He noted that in order to guarantee the growth of the sector, NORDIT had additionally given grants and incentives to a number of businesses.
"We are currently providing sponsorship for the production of corrugated ordinary duct; the newly founded company will be the first in all of Africa to produce this kind of product.
Additionally, we support the production of towers and fiber, and we've communicated with Coleman Cables, who is now producing fiber cables.
"They are growing and have even surpassed Egypt's sole enterprise in terms of manufacturing capacity.
"I have no doubt that many businesses are delighted with our work," he remarked.
Speaking as well, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, stated that the initiative to upskill senior media executives was motivated by the need to close the knowledge gap between the commission and its constituents.
On behalf of the NCC's Technical Services Executive Commissioner, Engr. Abraham Oshadami, Maida stated that the commission needs to create a system that would help stakeholders and customers understand how the business operates.
He continued by saying that the training's objectives were to build a trustworthy database of key players inside media systems' geographic boundaries and to forge strategic alliances with key players in the media. (NAN)
